New local Miss Virginia pageant honors princesses

RICHMOND—If you have ever thought of your daughter as a princess now is the time to let her be recognized as one. Miss Piedmont Region is hosting a princess program as part of its inaugural celebration.

“We are so happy to have this program available for the little ones,” said Whitney Sims Smith, princess coordinator with Miss Piedmont Region. “This program is not a competition, rather a mentoring program for the little girls to learn more about the Miss America programs and teach them about the importance of community service.”

The princess program will host a tea party for interested girls between the ages of 4 to 9-years-old on Oct. 19. Information on the event can be found on www.misspiedmontregion.webs.com. Applications for the program are also available on that site under “Princess”.

Miss Piedmont Region Scholarship Program will be held on Jan. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Virginia Farm Bureau’s Headquarters at 12580 West Creek Parkway in Richmond. Tickets will be available at the door for $15.

The Miss Piedmont Region Scholarship Program is a non-profit scholarship program whose purpose is awarding scholarships to deserving young women ages 17 to 24-years-old and providing a forum for their community service. The program also includes two additional scholarship competitions for Miss Outstanding Teen (ages 13-17), and Miss Outstanding Preteen (ages 10-12) Piedmont Region.

The winners of those three programs will go on to represent Miss Piedmont Region at the Miss Virginia pageant, June 21-27, 2009 in Roanoke.

The Miss Piedmont Region Scholarship Program is an affiliate of the Miss Virginia and Miss America Scholarship Organization.  The Miss America Organization, with its state and local affiliates, is the number one resource in the world for women to receive educational scholarships.  In 2007, the Miss America Scholarship Organization made available over $45 million to 12,000 women.  It is the financial support of organizations, businesses and individuals, from the smallest companies to the Fortune 500 companies, who make the $45 million in scholarships available nationwide.

Application registration deadline for the princess program is Oct. 15.
